This blog below has articles on the ingredients that make shea butter special. Please note that two types of shea are commonly used -west African Shea butter and East African Shea Butter.

Beneficial Properties of Pure, Unrefined Shea Butter: Spotlight on Cinnamic Acid

Most shea butter available to the general public outside of West Africa is white and odorless: in other words, it has been “refined” to remove the naturally-occurring scent and color. Only pure, unrefined shea butter has the true healing and moisturizing properties sought after by people for millennia. Due to the high heat, chemicals and other harsh applications involved in the refining process, the majority of shea butter’s effective agents are also removed when it is not handcrafted.

One of these agents is Cinnamic Acid. It’s presence in shea butter is an indication of the butter’s environmental history and post-extraction conditions. In other words, a higher concentration of Cinnamic Acid signifies a more natural, higher quality and better performing shea butter. This crystalline acid is also found in cinnamon oil and balsams and is widely used in the manufacturing of fragrance for the perfume industry. The Merck Index defines Cinnamic Acid’s odor as “honey” and “floral” and indeed raw, unrefined shea butter has a subtle sweet scent to it. Remove the odor and you have removed much of the inherent healing and protective features in shea butter.

Cinnamic Acid

The beneficial properties of Cinnamic Acid are far-reaching. Research has demonstrated that Cinnamic Acid has antibacterial, anti-fungal and parasite fighting abilities. It also inhibits elastase, an enzyme that breaks down proteins, including elastin, which as the name implies, is responsible for the elasticity and resilience of youthful skin. Studies have also shown that Cinnamic Acid absorbs UV radiation. Chemists surmised in a 2006 study performed at the Northeast Normal University in China, that Cinnamic Acid and its derivatives have potential for use in sunscreen products.
